Bringing a new puppy into your home is one of the most rewarding – and chaotic – times you can experience. When we welcomed Bear into our lives, we knew that one of the first big challenges we’d face would be toilet training. Fortunately, we were given some great advice early on that truly made the difference, especially when it came to using puppy pads.

The Power of Routine
One of the best pieces of advice we received was to stick to a strict routine. That meant guiding Bear to use the puppy pad:
First thing in the morning
Last thing at night
After meals
After playtime
And just before or after naps
We made a habit of gently leading him to the pad at each of these key moments, and it wasn’t long before he began to understand the rhythm of the day.

Making the Transition Outdoors
One clever tip we tried, which worked wonders, was moving the pads closer and closer to the door leading to the garden. Eventually, we placed them just outside. This helped Bear associate “potty time” with going out. It was such a smooth transition—he got the message quickly and started heading straight to the garden when he needed to go. It felt like a small victory every time!
A Few Extra Tips for Fellow Puppy Parents
As we look back, there are a few additional pieces of advice we’d share with anyone going through the same journey:
Positive reinforcement is key: Every time Bear did his business where he was supposed to, he got a little treat or lots of verbal praise. It helped him understand he was on the right track.
Don’t punish accidents: They happen! If Bear had an accident, we just cleaned it up calmly and reinforced where he should go instead.
Consistency from everyone in the house: Whether it was us or any visitors, we all followed the same rules and routines with Bear. That consistency helped avoid confusion.
Use scent to your advantage: If you’re encouraging outdoor toilet training, try moving a soiled pad to the garden a few times. The scent acts as a signal to your pup that this is the right spot.
Stay patient: Puppies are learning everything for the first time. There will be setbacks—but with time and love, they get there.
Looking back, we’re so proud of Bear and how far he’s come. Potty training can feel daunting at the start, but with the right tools, advice, and a bit of patience, it truly does get easier. We hope sharing our story helps make your journey a little smoother too!
